Kanoshizuku Gin, crafted by Yomeishu Seizo in Nagano, Japan, showcases the mastery of botanical blending with a unique focus on the Kuromoji plant, an aromatic tree native to the region. Known for its medicinal properties, Yomeishu has ventured from its traditional roots into the world of craft gin with this expression. With an ABV of 40%, this gin emphasizes a distinctly Japanese profile that combines tradition with modern craft.

Flavor Profile

On the nose, Kanoshizuku opens with delicate floral and herbal aromas, led by the signature Kuromoji. A light medicinal fragrance reminiscent of mountain herbs adds complexity, similar to genepi liqueur. The palate starts soft, introducing subtle juniper and lemon peel, before evolving into a warming spice with ginger, Sichuan pepper, and cinnamon playing key roles. The licorice and cardamom add depth, giving the gin a balanced sweetness amidst its earthy tones. As the taste unfolds, it becomes drier and spicier, rounding off with a long, fragrant finish that leaves the mouth pleasantly tingling with a mix of fresh botanicals.

Suggested Cocktail Pairings

Kanoshizuku Gin’s bold yet nuanced flavors make it highly versatile in cocktails. It shines in a classic Martini, where its aromatic and floral notes can be fully appreciated. For those who enjoy stirred drinks, the gin pairs beautifully with vermouth in a Negroni, allowing the spice and pine notes to shine. Additionally, its distinct character works well in highballs or Gin & Tonic variations, where its citrus and spice are uplifted.

Overall Rating

Kanoshizuku Gin is a superb example of Japanese craftsmanship, combining traditional botanicals with a modern dry gin profile. The emphasis on Kuromoji offers a uniquely aromatic experience that sets it apart from more conventional gins. Its balanced complexity makes it a versatile choice for both sipping neat and in a variety of cocktails. If you’re looking for a gin that captures the essence of Japan’s rich botanical landscape, Kanoshizuku is a must-try.

  1. I am no connoisseur but this is my favourite tipple. Yomeishu was famous for its medicinal herbal tonic and the brand has branched out to produce a variety of products including this gin. For some the herbal and floral flavours may be too much but I find them perfectly to my taste as the base for a g and t with fresh lime. Highly refreshing and very drinkable. On a side note the Yomeishu facility in central Nagano is well worth a visit. It is possible to tour part of the production facility as well as taste their various products. There are a number of dining options, a shop and a mountain walk. Highly recommended.
