It can be argued that watermelon is the symbol of summer, eaten and enjoyed in a variety of ways around the world. But, since we are the Gin Observer, we opted in to enjoy it in a cocktail. Although our recipe calls for a single serving, the Watermelon Gin Punch is great for batch cocktails and parties. Simply double, triple, quadruple the recipe and enjoy with friends and family. Let’s be honest, having the second drink already ready is always a plus, and the lovely color and refreshing smell will make you want to grab some sunglasses, sunscreen, and a few gin filled glasses.
In difference to many cocktails, this gin drink calls for watermelon juice, and as nice as it might be to go on a hunt for a specialty product, it is not necessary in this case. All you need is a fresh watermelon, a blender, and fine mesh strainer. Since watermelon has a high water concentration there is no need to blend it with anything else, and the fine mesh strainer takes out any pulp that can make the cocktail’s consistency anything but smooth, resulting in sweet and organic watermelon juice.
Hiding beneath layers of watermelon you will find the beloved gin, a hint of citrus from lemon, and a sweet balance of mint and sugar all mixed together for a summer drink hit. The best part, this drink can be made ahead of time, minus the ice, and be left in a fridge to cool down and be enjoyed without concerns for flavor and potency alterations.
